Wireless Internet Access
now available at both
Noel & Pineville Libraries

We have installed new and improved equipment that works with your 802.11 wireless networking devices at BOTH locations.  You should find it easier than ever to connect anywhere in our Noel & Pineville Libraries (including the parking lots)!

Bring your laptop/notebook, PDA, handheld PC, or other 802.11 personal wireless internet device, then check your email and surf the internet at T1-speeds!

Currently, access distance is limited to inside the library, and within a few yards of our doors, including the parking lots.

This is a FREE public internet access point, there are no fees to use it, and only a few reasonable restrictions to prevent abuse.

Anyone that is used to working with wireless devices should be able to easily connect to our system without any trouble or additional information. But here are the technical details just in case you need them:

SSID: pinelib or noellibrary
Protocols supported: 802.11b, 802.11g, (also 802.11a at Pineville)
Data rates: 1 - 22 Mpbs (with automatic fallback)
WEP: NO encryption
Frequency: 2.4 Ghz
Internet connection: T1 (1.5 Mbps) routed and firewalled
TCP/IP: DHCP server automatically assigns IP and DNS addresses on a 2 hour automatically renewing lease.

Make sure your computer's wireless adapter TCP/IP network properties are set to “Obtain an IP address automatically”

Step-by-step Instructions:

WHAT YOU NEED:
1. Most any type of notebook computer, PDA/handheld PC, or other personal wireless internet access device that operates using your batteries or 12v car adapter. (We don't provide A/C outlets.)

2. Most any brand or type of industry-standard wireless adapters that will work with your portable device (if it doesn't already have one built-in).

Since nothing is 100% compatible with anything else anymore, we can't guarantee that your device will work with our system, and we do not provide technical support if your own wireless devices/notebooks don't connect well with our system.

And now for a few Reasonable Restrictions:

These free access points are provided as a service to our community. Now that the price of wireless equipment has finally dropped to where we could easily afford it, we wanted to be the first in the area to offer this service (which is usually found only in major metropolitan areas across the country).

To keep this free and open to everyone, please understand the following:

Don't hog bandwidth. It's perfectly OK to occasionally download several huge files (that's what it's there for!) and it is OK to use P2P software - but do not try to set up any sort of server from this system. (Our firewall generally prevents this anyway.) We monitor our usage logs for bandwidth abuse and will take action to throttle back our allocations if necessary.

24/7/365? The library is offering this as a public service to our patrons. We intend to keep the system available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. However, occasional disruptions of service are inevitable, and there are no guarantees. We also reserve the right to limit access / bandwidth / number of users when necessary. (Especially during regular library hours when Public Access Computers are available.)

No Technical Support is Offered from the McDonald County Library. Don't even ask. If you can't find the answer on our web site, then no one here knows the answer. :)

Thanks for your cooperation and understanding... Enjoy!
