This
Guide is divided in Sections, to help you find what you need quickly:
A Internet Web Browser, similar to Netscape Navigator and Mozilla, but with different features. (Our favorite!)
The most commonly used Web Browser.
Can be used to view many media types. Also has direct access to videos, movies and music online.
This Mozilla-based Web Browser is the 2nd most popular browser in the world.
IT ALSO CAN BE USED TO DESIGN WEB PAGES!
This is provided if you need to access Internet Newsgroup info, or even your own email from a POP or IMAP email server.
(Note: You have to configure it with your own server settings - so this feature is not for novice users.)
An easy-to-use FTP program with "explorer-style" layouts & drag & drop simplicity.
The standard in PDF file readers. It is used to view & print things like tax forms, and other PDF files downloaded from the Internet.
Used when viewing QuickTime files (usually online) - Has features similar to Windows Media Player.
Used when viewing RealPlayer files (usually online) - Has features similar to Windows Media Player.
A very popular MP3 / audio player. It also has an extensive list of online Internet Radio Stations that you can listen to.
Use this to create (burn) regular Music CDs & Data CDs or DVDs. Click it's "Wizard" button for easy step-by-step help!
This can create amazing DVD or VCD multimedia presentations and movies. (Note: Any such project is usually complex & time-consuming.)
Similar to Sonic MyDVD, this works differently (some may find it easier to create special effects) and has many interesting samples to work with.
Create slideshows using your photos using a wizard-type workflow, DVD PictureShow makes creating slideshows easy.
Create slideshows using either the DVD or VCD format and view them on your PC or television.
This DVD Player is used whenever you insert a DVD movie into the PC's DVD-ROM drive.
(Makes it simple to preview DVD's here before checking them out.)
After pressing the scanner's Power button, use this wizard to make your scanning easier.
If you used the scanner button to do a quick scan, your image is automatically saved here.
A great tool to organize and edit photos that you scanned or downloaded from the Internet.
Double-click any image to view details, where you can zoom in, rotate, and otherwise Adjust Image.
THIS ALSO HAS A VERY USEFUL PRINT FUNCTION that makes it easy to print multiple images on a single page!
A more advanced photo / image editor than Photo Explorer, it allows you to add more special effects to your pictures and edit in greater detail.
This allows you to modify the way the scanner buttons work.
(Try adjusting this if you don't like the results you get from using the buttons on the scanner.)
A powerful Word Processor, similar to Microsoft Word. It allows you to edit most .doc files created with other programs.
Similar to Microsoft Excel. It allows you to edit most spreadsheet files created with other programs.
A vector-based drawing program. Good for creating signs & posters with text and simple graphics.
Similar to Microsoft PowerPoint, allows you to quickly build & edit simple presentations.
This is the place to save any files you download, create, scan, or otherwise want to work with. It is actually a shortcut to the F:\USER folder on the hard drive.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Any files you save in this folder (or its sub-folders) will NOT be erased when you RESTORE this computer.
That can be both good & bad: Good if you want to restore the PC when getting ready to burn a CD containing files you just downloaded, for instance... Bad if you create something with personal information (like a resume) and leave it on the hard drive after you are done using the computer. BE SURE TO DELETE YOUR FILES WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED USING THIS PC!
Use this if you need to browse the computer, looking for where your files are.
(It's usually easier to click the Start button, and choose "Search" > "For Files and Folders")
Use this to view the contents of your Floppy Disk (drive A:)
Use this to view the contents of your Compact Flash (Digital Camera / PDA) memory card.
Use this to view the contents of your Memory Stick (Digital Camera / PDA) memory card.
Use this to view the contents of your Smart Media (Digital Camera / PDA) memory card.
Use this to view the contents of your Secure Digital (Digital Camera / PDA) memory card.
Use this to view the contents of your Iomega ZIP 100mb, 250mb, or 750mb disk.
Note: The Zip 750 drive can READ, but not write to ZIP 100 disks. If you need to write to a ZIP 100 disk, drag & drop the files into the "Genealogy User Folder" icon (described below).
This is provided for users who need to write to Iomega ZIP 100 disks (see above). Any files dropped into this folder are transferred over the network to the Genealogy PC. You can then go over to that PC and write (copy) the files onto your ZIP 100 disks using that PC's older ZIP drive.
This is where your deleted files usually end up. Open this if you accidentally deleted a file. Just follow the simple instructions on the left pane to recover your file(s).
IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN YOURSELF when you are finished using the computer. (Don't rely on the "RESTORE" icon to remove your personal files when you are finished using the computer - it doesn't affect files deleted from the "My Documents" folder!)
This is the Network Service area, provided for tech support purposes only.
Use this if you want to scan your floppy disk, ZIP disk, or Memory Card to insure it doesn't have a virus.
(To be the most safe, choose "Tools" > "Download Virus Database Update" before you start your scan!)
Similar to WinZip. If you download a .ZIP file from the internet, you can use this to easily view and extract the contents.
This shortcut allows you to view or cancel your files that are waiting to be printed to the B&W public laser printer.
This shortcut allows you to view or cancel your files that are waiting to be printed to the COLOR laser printer.
READ THIS !!! VERY IMPORTANT !!!
What makes this Special Graphics Workstation possible is its ability to quickly and easily "restore" the computer to perfect working order for each and every user. This way, you are saved from the frustration of using a computer that's been "messed up" by users before you - and is especially important to use before burning a CD or DVD. (It prevents the type of computer errors that can result in a ruined CD!)
PLEASE RESTORE THE COMPUTER WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED USING IT.
Especially if you installed software, or otherwise modified the regular computer setup.
You may also wish to run the RESTORE before you begin using the computer. (Especially when you are about to burn a CD or DVD!) This will ensure that the computer is running in optimal condition, and that your experience will be as hassle-free as possible.
The whole process only takes about 3 short minutes, and is well worth the effort. To begin, close any programs you are using, and double-click the "RESTORE" icon (just above the "Start" button at the lower left corner of the screen). Then just follow the step-by-step instructions on the screen...
One Last Reminder: IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN YOURSELF when you are finished using the computer. (Don't rely on the "RESTORE" icon to remove your personal files when you are finished using the computer - it doesn't affect files deleted from the "My Documents" folder!)
